HHO, PWM, Brown's (also known as Brown) Gas, Hydrolysis, Hydroxy Gas, Fuel from Water, Myths, Magic and Conspiracy Theories To the uninitiated let us give this thumbnail sketch. Several years ago, Yull Brown working in Sydney, Australia, proposed hydrolysing water using DC current to make a hydrogen/oxygen mixture called HHO as a fuel.
Although Brown suggested that HHO could be used to power automobiles, he opted to develop a mains-powered PWM-based hydrolysing unit as part of a gas cutting and welding system that eliminated the need for heavy and dangerous gas cylinders for oxygen and hydrogen.
Other "inventors" followed, some misguidedly suggesting that cars could be powered by HHO and all one would need would be water and a battery to start the process. (Unfortunately they ignored the simple fact that it takes more energy to separate the hydrogen and oxygen than we get back when we combine them).
On the other hand many HHO experimenters reported that, when they added the so-called HHO to the airfuel mixture in conventional vehicles, improvements of 20% or more in fuel economy were obtained. Diesel engines were said to be showing a 30% improvement
At a time when fuel prices are rising, any significant increase in fuel economy is cause for research, discussion and debate.
Experimenters also noted that a lot of energy was being wasted as heat in the hydrolyser cells, boiling off the electrolyte. To control the amount of current through the water hydrolysing cells HHO buffs started using Pulse Width Modulators (PWM) to control the current drawn by the cells. Of these PWMs Maxx Tronic's MXA 066 would be the most popular world-wide.
ABOUT PULSE WIDTH MODULATORS (PWM) Pulse width modulators (PWM) are at the heart of most DC motor Controllers, Power Supplies and HHO hydrolysers. Their efficiency is due to the fact that, instead of resitively controlling the flow of current into a load, they control the load's AVERAGE current by turning the current on and off at differing ratios. That is, controlling or modulating the length of the ON pulse. thus the name pulse width modulation or PWM. Why are PWMs so efficient? By turning the current switching devices (usually MOSFET Transistors) hard on the effective resistance of the transistor is nearly zero so very little energy is lost through resistive heating. When the MOSFET(S) is hard OFF no current flows so, again, there is no heating. The only transistor heating that is generated is during the transition times of turning ON and again when turning OFF, so it is important to minimize the time that it takes for the transistors to change state and that requires well designed drive electronics.
WARNING!! There are a few PWMs out there that are using the MXA066 name and design without permission. Please ensure that you are buying the genuine Maxx Tronic MXA 066 - If in any doubt call us for verification.
